What is the difference between a Riser Pad and a Half pad with horses?

I have to use a black riser pad under my saddle, for my horse, but i was looking at sheepskin half pads. They certainly look better. Do risers and halfs pads have the same purpose but different appearnces?

To the best of my knowlege, ask at the stables though
