Could my horse stay out all year round?

I have a 15.1 hh cob type horse, he is out 24 / 7 for now … last year I brought him over the winter, fed him and went during the day of the rough. But I prefer to keep him out during the this winter because it is less work and less expensive, would also be happier that way – I think.! It is only 4 and not interested in being locked into a stable. Also atm fat so do not eat anything. My question is if the horses / ponies stay in winter and are injured? (He is not clipped) I have a stake carpet for him, but could not manage without until it was too cold (snow?) That is quite hairy and feel that is a bit of a JST vague question im looking for opinions no 'cheaping out'
